TSP distribution or withdrawal happens in 4 different methods.

  1. Partial Distribution – The account holder must withdraw a minimum of $1000 from their TSP account.
  2. Complete Distribution – Withdrawing the entire amount present in the TSP account.
  3. Annuity Purchase – Purchase annuities with TSP funds for lifetime coverage. This is a one-time payment for annuities where the federal employee gets monthly payments for their lifetime.
  4. Installments – A monthly, quarterly, or half-yearly plan to withdraw money from the TSP account.

Different TSP rollover methods are –

    1. In-Kind Transfer – This type of transfer is applicable for switching your investments from one employer to another without any tax penalties.
    2. Set Up IRAs Before Rollover – Choose the type of IRA account and appoint beneficiaries before rolling over a TSP account. Your employer can directly transfer funds to the new account or offer a cheque to deposit into the new employer’s plan.
    3. Liquidation of Individual Funds – Closing down different types of TSP funds and liquidating the amount to invest in the rollover account.

The 2 Types of Rollover are –

  1. Direct Rollover – Broker to Broker
  2. Indirect Rollover – TSP to person
